Retaining walls are structures that help hold back any material like soil and prevents it from eroding away with water or sliding off. Cantilever retaining walls:
These walls are constructed by using a reinforced version of concrete which houses a thin stem and base slab. The base slab is divided into two portions. The heel forms the part which is the backfill and the toe forms the other part of the base. These retaining walls use less concrete as compared to monolithic gravity walls but need to be designed carefully during construction. These walls can attain a height of up to 25 feet. It can be formed on site or precast in the factory to be carried to the site of requirement.
Counterfort retaining walls:

Counterfort retaining walls are almost similar to the cantilever kind, but they have thin vertically aligned concrete based webs placed at regular intervals on the backside of the wall. These webs are termed as counterforts. The purpose of the counterforts is to bring down the force of impact on the wall by the soil. The counterforts also increase the weight of the wall which helps bring down the overall impact.
Gravity Poured Concrete retaining walls:
Gravity retaining walls resist lateral earth forces with the help of their weight as well as of any soil resting on the concrete wall. Economical height is up to 10 feet whose monolithic cast walls are normally formed right on site.
